Feedback on our Madagascar Dhow Bungalow & Camping Trip
Nichola Court recently returned from her 8-day Madagascar Dhow Bungalow & Camping Trip and she gave us some great feedback which we just had to share with you!
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Hard to pick one thing - snorkelling with turtles was fantastic, as was Nosy Tanikeley. But the close encounters with lemurs on Nosy Komba probably stands out the most. All in all, though, the trip was fantastic.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Change Euros to Ariary if / when you get the chance, as most Malagasy don't like to have Euros and you can miss out on variable exchange rates (on the odd chance you get to spend money, that is). Be aware that the climate in the islands is very different to that of the mainland; we could only find temperatures for Antananarivo, and it was vastly hotter and more humid in the islands than Tana. We didn't need sleeping bags, although it did get a bit chilly on the odd night, so take a blanket, or at least a duvet cover to sleep in. Be prepared to use drop toilets and not have a proper shower for a few days!! If you like comfort, think hard before booking this trip. Take your own snorkelling gear, there was spare stuff to use but better to have your own. Be aware that you can only charge batteries when the boat has its engines on and is actually moving, so you might not be able to get your camera batteries fully charged. Also, be aware that Air Madagascar can be a bit erratic with its timings, so be sure to leave ample time between connections (although the service on board was very good).
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?
Very little environmental impact as little waste was generated. There were very few locals for us to interact with, but there is a crew of 5 on the dhow and each campsite has 2 people to provide security / 'room service' so it is a good source of employment / tips.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Fantastic!!!!!! A wonderful experience and better than I had hoped for. Some wonderful memories, I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend.

Find out more about... Iranja Lodge
Finding the ideal holiday accommodation is not always easy... So close your eyes and picture sun kissed sandy white beaches, crystal clear tropical waters teeming with exotic fish and accommodation so deliciously relaxing and comfortable you will never want to leave... Welcome to Iranja Lodge!
Situated just off the North West coast of Madagascar this diminutive island is made up of two smaller islands, Iranja Be and Iranja Kely, which are joined by a 1.2 km sandbank. The smaller of the two islands, Iranja Kely is home to Iranja Lodge and boasts total tranquility, incredible wildlife experiences and breath-taking natural beauty.
The island is blessed with crystal clear turquoise waters and so you have to take advantage of its amazing diving, snorkelling and fishing opportunities! There are 25 dive sites located around the island and 18 sites which are ideal for snorkelling. It also has some of the best fishing in the world and the lodges experience nautical team will be more than happy to take you on a fishing excursion. Other water adventures include water-skiing, parasailing, wake-boarding, windsurfing, kayaking, scuba diving and sea safaris in search of dolphins, whales and sea turtles.

If you would prefer to stay on land then there is plenty to keep you busy including a hike to the Gustav Eiffel Lighthouse, games such as volleyball, badminton, boule, darts, and a pool table and ping pong table. If you are feeling especially active you can even join the locals in a game of soccer! Excursions can also be organized around the island and it is recommended that you take a tour through the Baramamahy mangrove swamps where you will be sure to see crocodiles, fish, giant soccer ball sized crabs, fruit bats bigger than seagulls and if you are lucky you might even spot wild lemur in their natural habitat. After such an active day indulge in a relaxing massage using traditional Malagasy oils and unwind as the lodge's expert masseur massages away the stresses of the day.
Something that makes Iranja Lodge and the island incredibly unique is that Nosy Iranja is the only Island in Madagascar which is visited by two of the world's eight species of turtle - the Green Sea Turtle and the endangered Hawksbill Turtle. Every year 300 adult turtles return to their birth place to lay their own clutch of eggs. If you are lucky you might get to see these amazing creatures frolicking in the ocean and watch the miracle of a baby turtle emerging from its shell. Iranja Lodge is fully committed to the continuation of the species and has appointed a fully trained member of staff to look after these protected species.
Iranja Lodge has only 29 luxury villas spread out amongst the lush tropical gardens on the island, to ensure that guests are afforded complete privacy. The lodge is made up of 20 deluxe 105 square meter suites which accommodate 2 adults (an extra bed can be added for 1 child under 12 years of age) and 9 deluxe family 140 square meter suites which accommodate 4 adults (2 additional beds can be added for children under 12 years of age).
The beautifully decorated villas are designed and furnished so as to blend harmoniously into the natural environment. The villas are equipped with elegant four-post beds, mosquito nets, tea and coffee making facilities, ceiling fans, personal safes, mini bar fridges, CD players, a hair dryer, dressing room, and a large en-suite bathroom with a shower, bath and basins individually carved from indigenous wood. A private hammock and two recliners adorn the private terrace from where guests are treated to a private garden and panoramic views of the ocean.
At the Iranja Lodge it's not difficult to imagine that you are the only person on the island...
