Madagascar... the first of many visits to the Red island

Last month Ziggy and Rehana returned from their 10-day Madagascar educational with some incredible stories about their experiences of the world's fourth largest island, and we just had to share them with you!

Ziggy:

"Day 4: The next morning we visited a lemur park - another rehabilitation centre. This was amazing as the lemurs were very touchy feely, jumping from a tree onto our shoulder, hoping for bananas. Although a bit touristy we all really enjoyed interacting with these lemurs and being able to get really close. This lemur park consists of 3 islands of which only one is accessible to tourists. The other two are for pure rehabilitation. Off we went to the Perinet National Park to visit the Indri Indri (called the Babakoto in Malagasy) which are the largest lemurs on the island. The lemurs in this reserve are wild and cannot be touched. It was wonderful walking through the forest, hearing and seeing the Indri Indri - they make the most god-awful screeching sound. We also saw a few other lemur types (7 types in total). On the same day we continued to Mandadia Park for a hike through the rainforest."

Rehana:

"Day 8: After an early breakfast, we drove through Ranohira, to pick up our local guide for our hikes in Isalo National Park. Armed once again with water and mosquito repellent we hiked through the Maki and Rat Canyons. We learned that the local people create graves for their beloved in the steep cliffs of the canyons. At about mid day, we headed to the natural rock pool (piscine naturelle) for a swim. After a 20 minute hike, learning about the local culture, medicinal plants and viewing of canyon we reached the rock pool and waterfall. After a refreshing swim, we hiked back to the bus.

On our way we were caught in a thunderstorm, which is very rare for the time of year!! It was utterly amazing, with thunder above you and lightning ahead of you and rain pelting down on you, you realize how small we really are. Safely, but sopping wet, we returned to our hotel, to celebrate our last day with our tour group."

If you would like to have your own Madagascar adventure or would like to find out more about this fascinating island please email one of our friendly consultants or view our Travel2Madagascar website.
