Learning about Madagascar with Debby
Counting the 'sleeps' was finally over - and here I was... at the Air Madagascar check-in counter, O.R.Tambo International, eagerly anticipating the hot, sunny skies and the sparkling, blue ocean that was waiting for me just 4 hours away! After checking in I met the rest of the excited agents at the Mugg & Bean ... and so our journey began... Everything went smoothly and perhaps the only surprise we had, was when the Air Madagascar air hostess smiled and said "Duck or Fish?"
I can vouch for the fish - but those who had the duck said it was great too...! This was just the first of many pleasant surprises. To our delight, we discovered that food prices are generally the same as in South Africa, so needless to say - we certainly ate well wherever we went!

The following morning, we searched for the famous Indri Indri, the largest lemur, which is endangered due to the destruction of its forest habitat. After lunch we set off back to Antananarivo where we spent the next few days doing site inspections, before flying to Nosy Be. I loved every part of Madagascar, but truly fell in love with Nosy Be and it's surrounding islands...
This island has everything for the adventure traveller, honeymooners who love the sea and not forget it is wonderful for families too: choose from glorious beaches to lush rainforests and amazing fauna and flora - I personally can't wait to go back!

Tiptoe to the Tsingy Rouge
The 'Tsingy rouge', known as the red Tsingy, is one of the most popular Madagascar highlights in the Northern part of Madagascar. The word 'Tsingy' means 'to tiptoe', adding to the charm of these unique and peaked, red coloured formations. These natural wonders are made out of limestone, marl and lime and are set on the bottom of an eroded canyon, which is situated about a 2 hours drive from Diego Suarez.
The regional tourist office and the residents of the near village Ankarongana are actively working on preserving this fragile landscape... Half of all the entrance fees of 10 000 Ariary (about EUR 3.50 / ZAR 35) are put towards the development of the local community where (for example) the building of a school in Madagascar is being financed!
If you would like to see these beautiful and unusual rock formations why not join us on our Madagascar North Adventure for 8-days of exploration. Priced from EUR 1 070 / USD 1 605 (for 4 people) you will be able see and capture the very rare Tsingy - nothing else quite like it anywhere else... Just don't forget to "tiptoe" around...

Quirky facts about Madagascar!
Malagasy love their rice!
Did you know that Madagascar is the country with the highest consumption of rice per capita? Every Malagasy consumes 120 kg rice per year. Side dishes are fresh vegetables, Zebu meat and at the coastline obviously fish. The ancestors of the Madagascans brought rice from Indonesia and Malaysia. The rice cultivation is a huge advantage for the country. Madagascar's mountainous highland is still characterized by artistically created rice terraces.
The Malagasy make their paper like the Egyptians used to!
In Madagascar paper is produced like was in Ancient Egypt! For generations the Antaimoro people, living on the southeast coast of Madagascar, have been producing natural coloured paper. A legend says that once an Arabic trading ship stranded at the coast of Antaimoro and the crew settled down in Madagascar. They brought their knowledge about the paper production onto the island and started to make paper, which reminds of fine woodchip wallpaper, out of the Malagasy mulberry tree, Avoha.
