John Maytham - local radio presenter returns from Madagascar

John Maytham is one of Cape Towns' local celebrities; hosting talk shows on a local radio station named "567 Cape Talk". John has his own program which features new and exciting topics daily, as well as discussions on current and political affairs. We were thrilled for the opportunity to arrange John's holiday and let him experience Jenman Safaris' passion and knowledge for Madagascar.

"The days start with an early morning cup of coffee or tea then perhaps a swim or some kayaking or maybe some fishing - or bird watching in my case. After breakfast, the dhow sails somewhere where the sand is white, the water is clear and warm and where there is a reef that will provide superb snorkelling. I haven't done much snorkelling, so I don't have much in the way of reference, but I was absolutely gob-smacked by the variety and extraordinary colour patterns of the fish we saw. It's difficult to keep exact count when one is underwater marvelling at the glory of the fish and the hawksbill turtles that one can swim right up to and the coral and the sea anemones and the sea cucumbers and the moray eels and the absolute clarity of the water, but I reckon we saw upwards of 75 different species of tropical fish in our week underwater."

Political progress for Madagascar

Madagascar's feuding leaders (Ravalomanana and Rajoelina) have agreed on a power-sharing deal that would cede control of the exotic Indian Ocean Island to an interim government, with elections then coming within 15 months. This will promote peace and put an end to all the uncertainty that the Malagasy people were experiencing.

The agreement to share power recently occurred at the Maputo Summit and the leaders were all commended for their commitment to returning the country to normality - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon even praised them for their plan of action. This plan of action and commitment (under the auspices of the AU and SADC) will promote peace and stability for Madagascar - offering safe travel.

Green Turtles of Madagascar

A while ago we came across a very interesting article about the Green Turtles of Madagascar. Green Turtle sightings are rare, as the turtles prefer secluded sandy shores and can only be seen at night when the tide is high... The best sightings of these Green Turtles can be found on Nosy Sakatia during the breeding season (November to May). The Green Turtles are protected and are under the safety of a local conservationist.

"Within a few hundred metres, we saw new tracks form the sea leading inland again. There were two pairs of tracks leading to and from a grassy bank. We climbed up the bank in anticipation and looked around, but could see no visible signs of recent activity. Robert explained that the Turtle must have come up the bank to survey the area for potential nesting sights and would return again in the near future to lay her eggs..."

"In addition to the Green and Hawksbill Turtles, Madagascar is also a breeding site for the less common Olive Ridley's and Leatherback Turtles. The Loggerhead Turtle is also occasionally seen in Malagasy waters, although there have been no reports of breeding until now..."
