Hello,

This month we would like to introduce you to Salohy, our Malagasy intern, who shares with us her top three Madagascar must do activities as well as some travel advice that you won't find in a travel guide! If you are wondering how to spoil your loved one this year or looking for some travel tips from a Madagascar traveller... read on to find out more!

Welcome to Salohy... our very own Malagasy intern!

Salohy started interning with us just a few weeks ago and she has already proved herself to be an extremely valuable part of the team! She is currently hard at work helping our Product Managers update all our adventure-packed itineraries and packages... and giving us all some interesting insights into Madagascar!

Where in Madagascar are you from?
I come from Ambositra (a small town located 3 hours to the south of Tana). I am a proud Betsileo girl. I've never lived there but we used to spend holidays there once or twice a year. I speak a little bit of the Betsileo dialect but with the Tana accent. What a shame!

Why did you choose to come to South Africa to do your internship?
I completed High School in Madagascar and chose to further my studies in France. I am currently completing my 3rd year in Management of Leisure and Travel. As part of my course I have to do a 5 month internship in a company of my choice. South Africa sounded like the perfect country to do my internship! Actually I am convinced that South Africa's touristic development is the ideal one to bring to and adapt in Madagascar...

There are a ton of tour operators in South Africa, but specifically I was looking for a small tour operator which really understood what Africa was about. A company with strong values of conservation, who really knows what ecotourism is all about. I was looking for this Tour Operator for months (since September) and I was about to call my teacher and ask him to find me a rescue-internship in Spain, when I bumped into a Jenman advert for an internship! I went through the website and was totally convinced that Jenman African Safaris was the perfect opportunity to grab! I emailed Antoinette and here I am! In this awesome city, in a fantastic dynamic team!!

Give us your Top 3 must-do's when travelling to Madagascar.
Firstly the Tsingy of Bemaraha in the West of Madagascar! It's an amazing experience and sensation to be above these rocky peaks! There are a lot of circuits but travellers have to try the circuit where you have to cross a rope bridge suspended 70 meters above rocks into the void... or try walking on the top of the Tsingy and have a view on the whole massif with all the peaks, and finally visit the underground caves and rub bats!

Another place to go is Andringitra National Park, which is located in the South East. It houses the Boby Peak, the highest peak in Madagascar. Nature, tradition and mystery surrounding Andringitra make this park a mystical place to explore. There are great stops and camping sites during the ascension to the peak (natural pools, hidden trails, etc.). There are about 4000 steps (I've tried to count!), the air is pure and the nature so quiet, and the morning haze on the mountain gives terrific scenery! It's a bit like a pilgrimage.

Finally, an incredible diving place in the coral reef; the National Park of Sahamalaza in the north just under Masoala! The water is hot and the sea is shallow so it's seems that you can touch the coral and fishes!

Do you have a secret tip for us that you won't find in any guide book?
It is sometimes a pity to be a traveller in a country were the local population doesn't speak English or French very well. French is one of our official languages but when it comes to dealing with a local vendor to buy a souvenir for example, they only speak Malagasy. Travellers have to keep in mind that local vendors know that foreign travellers have a high purchasing power. Be sure you are aware of the exchange rates.

So when buying traditional artefacts it's safer to bring a guide... he will be able to bargain with the vendor if the price is too high. Travellers will have better opportunities to find bargains in smaller local markets rather than the bigger tourists markets.

It is important to greet the vendor in Malagasy... they are always sensitive to this and will bring the price down immediately by a few Ariary! Don't be afraid to haggle over the prices and to suggest a third of the price announced! Saying that you have already been in Madagascar and that the price was cheaper then shows that you're not a silly traveller!

For those who are afraid of mosquito bites, you'll have to take gallons of anti-mosquito unless they want to bankrupt yourself by buying it in the local supermarkets. Instead buy coconut oil; it smells good and is economical. It's a local mosquito repellant and you can find it everywhere!

Essential travel advice from a seasoned Madagascar traveller

If you are thinking about travelling to Madagascar for your next holiday, keep reading! We have some fantastic travel advice from one of our happy clients who recently travelled to the 'red island'. Some of the exiting things she experienced on the island included: visiting the Baobab Alley, relaxing on the beaches of Morondava, enjoying the breathtaking scenery at Isalo National Park and viewing wildlife in the Perinet Reserve... sounds incredible! When we asked her what advice she had for anyone travelling to Madagascar she was more than happy to share her leanings...

Client: "As a vegetarian I found it difficult to get sufficient food (thisis obviously my personal observation) and I would probably have taken some muesli with me to supplement breakfasts - which were generally meagre. We did have chances to stock up on food and fruit in supermarkets which was good."
Jenman Island Safaris: Fruit, yoghurt and muesli are normally a very popular breakfast option in Madagascar which also suit vegetarians. But, we agree, some places don't always have stock of all of those options, which makes breakfasts for vegetarians a bit difficult. We are normally able to organise with lodges a few more exciting alternatives if we have enough warning. But, thanks for letting us know!

Client: "The photographic opportunities are numerous - take lots of memory cards/film. Re-charging cameras, i-pods, Kindles etc is no problem. Some of the best photographic opportunities are in the early morning - whether walking on the beach in Morondova or around gardens in the various hotels."
Jenman Island Safaris: Madagascar is an outstanding photographic destination; many of the animals are easily approached, the people are incredibly friendly; and the views are stunning, making for terrific photographic opportunities. Baobab Alley is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset when the sky turns shades of red and orange. So yes, take as much film as you can - we would hate for anyone to miss a fantastic sunrise or a magical lemur sighting!

Client: "Definitely visit the Lemur Park in Tana - it is a rescue centre in a lovely park setting with the lemurs running free (not in cages) and really friendly, informative staff. You can never have enough opportunities to see lemurs."
Jenman Island Safaris: Yes, you can never see enough lemurs! The Lemur Park is home to nine species of lemurs from all different regions of Madagascar, and as they are habituated to humans, it is possible to observe the lemurs at very close range (something which is not always possible in the other reserves and parks). One of the main goals of the park is to reintroduce lemurs born in the park into the wild... which s great! The more people visit this sanctuary the more lemurs they can help!

Client: "Take a head torch for the walks in the Tsingy... you will need your hands."
Jenman Island Safaris: Visiting Tsingy is not for the unadventurous, as navigating the 'stone forest' is quite a strenuous task. You will be doing lots of climbing and hiking, sometimes into caves and canyons, and you will cross a few rope bridges along the way. Bringing a head torch is a good idea as you will need all your concentration and your hands to help you balance.

Madagascar Do's and Don'ts - Fadys

When relaxing on holiday in Madagascar, interacting with the local Malagasy people and learning about their cultures there are a few important do's and don'ts that you should be aware of. Read on to find out more about the local fadys or taboos (things you shouldn't do)... ensuring you'll have an exciting and unique holiday full of adventure, learning and self-discovery!

Fady's vary greatly between regions, but in general, fady is much stronger in rural areas than in urban ones... so if you are travelling off the beaten path, we suggest that you get to know all about the local fadys.

For example in the region around Tsingy it is fady to point at something with just your forefinger... you must do it using all five fingers. In Imerina it is fady to hand an egg directly to someone... it must first be placed on the ground. It is fady to enter certain areas of Isalo National Park as the park is believed to be home to the 'Malagasy Spirit' due to the many sacred burial sites scattered across the park.

How do you find out about the local fadys? Ask your guide, other travellers or the village elders about what is fady in a particular area. By doing this you will avoid offending the local people, who are usually very warm and friendly and you will have a truly memorable holiday. Happy travelling!
