With over 250 bird species, including numerous endemics, Madagascar is of great interest to ornithologists.
To observe water birds, some of the best spots are in the remote areas along the western and south-western coasts, including Lac Tsimanampetsotsa.
Many of the national parks are also notable for their birdlife, for example the Masoala Peninsula Ampijorao. Birding in Ampijoroa is simply incredible, with likely sightings including:
- Madagascar gmgogene
- Madagascar crested ibis
- white-breasted mesite
- banded kestrel
- red-capped and coquerel's couas
Vanga species present are the rufons, blue, sicklebill, hook-billed, Chabert's and van Dam's vangas. One of the world's six rarest raptors, the Madagascar fish eagle, is resident around Lac Ravelobe and is easily spotted by most visitors.
Madagascar fish eagle - the fish eagle is Madagascar's largest surviving raptor and one of the world's six rarest eagles. The fish eagle is called “Ankoay” by the Malagasy. There are at most 200 of these birds left. They occur from Belo Sur Mur to Diego Suarez and inland for about 100 km (62 miles) along large bodies of water. This eagle is sure to be seen at Ampijoroa, on the Mitsio islands and also along the Tsiribihinia and Manambolo rivers. The fish eagle’s stronghold is to the left of the Tsingy de Bemaraha where there is a system of lakes near Antsalova that includes the last remaining western Malagasy wetland still in reasonable condition.
Madagascar teal - this small endemic duck is endangered and confined to western Madagascar. Today, just about the only area in which to observe the Madagascar teal is the lakes region west of Bemaraha, where some suitable habitat remains in places too saline to convert into rice paddies.
