Situated in the very heart of the Masoala Peninsula, on the east coast of Madagascar, this rustic beach camp offers safari style tented accommodation within a pristine rainforest.
Incredibly rich in fauna and flora, the Masoala Peninsula is one of the largest and most diverse areas of virgin rainforest in Madagascar, and probably harbours the greatest number of unclassified species. Staying within this reserve therefore offers an incredible opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of the forest, and to witness some of Madagascar’s endemic species.
Access to the lodge is by boat, from the small town of Maroantsetra, and takes approximately two hours to travel the 40km sea voyage across the Bay of Antongil to the Masoala Peninsula.
The five double safari style tents are each built on wooden decks, with thatched protective roofs, full mosquito netting and en-suite bathrooms. Each tent faces the ocean, and has a hammock where you can fall asleep to the sounds of the forest.
The restaurant offers meals exclusively for lodge clients. Generally these are a blend of Swiss and Malagasy rainforest cuisine, and the chef uses local produce seafood caught from the surrounding area.
Clients can enjoy a multitude of activities such as nature walks during the day, forest night walks to see nocturnal animals, guided sea-kayaking trips, snorkeling tours, whale watching trips (in season) & fishing trips. Sea-kayaks are available for those wishing to further explore the islands on their own, searching reefs, rivers and deserted beaches of the sheltered coastline.
The eco-tourism activities of the Masoala Forest Lodge form part of an international conservation program for the Masoala Peninsula with the aim of providing a source of sustainable income for the local communities.
